The film stars Steve McQueen as Jake Holman, a U.S. Navy machinist's mate assigned to a gunboat named the USS San Pablo, which patrols the Yangtze River. His initial goal is to simply serve his tour of duty and keep the ship's engine running. However, as he becomes more integrated into the crew and learns about the complexities of the situation in China, he becomes deeply involved in the ship's mission.
